Thinking about starting a fashion brand? Not sure how to start? I'm glad you came here, I will be giving you some of my very own top tips for starting a brand. Firstly you will need to map out your ideas, put pen to paper and draw some mockups for your concept/design. Take your first draft to your trusted friends and family. Pitch the concept to them as you would to someone who would be investing into your company, always ask for harsh feedback, take the positives and negatives on board and see how you can make your design better.
Once you are happy with your design, look for a graphic designer who has previously worked on similar concepts or designs. You can find some great designers at affordable prices using apps like Fiverr or searching through Instagram, these platforms are great for designers allowing them to communicate with potential clients and showcase their work. Pitch them your idea and give them as much detail, this allows them to see your vision in as much depth as possible.
Now you have your logo designed, start researching printing methods. This will help you to understand what will work for your logo and what may not. Different logos suit particular print methods, complex logos with multiple colours wouldn’t particularly work with screen print, vinyl or 2D embroidery. There are tons of methods available in the UK check them out, and see what would work best for your logo.
You can research these online via youtube or blogs on trusted manufacturing pages, or even visit some manufacturers and see the set ups first hand. If you visit them in person, show them your logo and get some advice on printing methods, the best thing about this is how the design turns out is a representation of their work and skills. So rest assured they will give you the best advice.
With all the work you have completed behind the scenes with research and designing it's time to bring your idea to lifeThe garment is important as you want to start by assuring your customers that your product is as good as the leading highstreet brands. This process has been made easier by companies like Branded Plain Clothes as they have done all the research for you. Offering the same quality you would expect from some of the best brands in the industry, at low MOQs (minimum order quantities) and affordable prices.
Depending on your starting budget it is usually best to start with caps and t-shirts as this is a great way to promote your brand and generate sales, you can never have enough t-shirts, and caps are a great way to finish off an elegant outfit. There are a variety of designs and colourways for you to try out.
Once you have the plain clothing in hand, find a trusted manufacturer, these are pretty easy to find, search on google, instagram, facebook or even your yellow pages. Discuss what printing methods and prices they offer. Check out some of their previous work, I'm sure they will be more than happy to show you these. If you are happy with what you see, take the leap and place your print bulk order, ask them for a sample to be made before they continue with the bulk order to ensure you are happy with the finished piece.
When you get this right you will find the next step to be the most enjoyable. Find a photographer and some models, get some photos of your products and post them on social media. Instagram, Twitter, TikTok are currently great platforms for brands to promote their clothing.
I truly believe that the way you promote your brand is just as important as the design, as long as you have 3 things, a great design, amazing quality and a marketing strategy you should have a successful brand.
